Class size is limited to 8 students

**THIS WORKSHOP IS A REQUIREMENT FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN DIRECTING A SHOW**

Taught by Paula Joines.

 

This class will focus upon the need for intentional blocking in order to relate the directors vision of the show and bring pop to the audience’s eye, to block scenes to be visually appealing and to best convey the focus and message of the story. Focusing upon the spatial relationships between actors and the use of levels to convey emotions, status of characters.

 

This workshop is designed to be a prerequisite for Directing Workshop and Student Directing classes offered in spring 2025, but may give current directors a chance to explore new ideas also!

 

We will need an additional group of volunteer actors willing to be available to work with students from 10:00 -1:00. Sign up to be a volunteer actor will be done separately from student registrations. Volunteer actors can be either teenagers or adults.

Instructor – Paula Joines has served as a director for numerous community theatre
productions over the past 20+ years, including The Outsiders, The Laramie Project,
The Trip to Bountiful, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Our Town, Where the Lilies
Bloom, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Anne of Green Gables. She holds an
Associate in Fine Arts degree in Theatre and also minored in theatre at Appalachian
State University. She is a Speech Language Pathologist who was also certified as a
Theatre Arts instructor by NC Department of Instruction. Paula has served as the
Theatre School coordinator for Wilkes Playmakers for the last 5 years where she has also taught a variety of classes and workshops for all ages – including student directing and directing.

**THIS WORKSHOP IS A REQUIREMENT FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN DIRECTING A SHOW**

This workshop is designed for both beginning directors as well as those directors who want to expand their skill base or try something new. We will look at all aspects of directing from licensing a show and legal requirements, script analysis, scene or French scenes, scheduling around a myriad of conflicts to make the best use of actor/ crew time, the phases of rehearsal schedules, getting a cast off-book successfully in time to dig into the real acting, how to prepare for difficult situations, and many more useful directing scenarios.

Taught by Baron Cooper.

By the end of the session, participants will have hands-on experience and confidence to assist in a theatrical lighting setup, ensuring both technical proficiency and safety.

​

Baron's lighting journey began in high school, where he developed a strong foundation in the field. Over the years, Baron has honed his expertise on a variety of lighting consoles, including both conventional models and the industry-standard ETC EOS consoles. For the past four years, Baron has been a key member of the Ashe County Little Theatre, which he proudly considers his home base. There, he has served as a lighting designer and programmer, contributing to numerous successful productions. Beyond his technical skills, Baron is a multi-talented theater professional, frequently stepping into roles as a director and actor, giving him a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of theatrical production.

Taught by Rebecca Herman Williams.

The class would include a brief costume history lesson, instruction on how to design a show, and then a basic sewing lesson, with emphasis on sewing tricks for theatre.

​

Rebecca has a BA in Theatre with concentration in costume design from Catawba College. She did four years of professional theatre working in costume shops in Atlanta, was an

assistant to costume professor and ran the costume shop at East Carolina University.

She owned her own bridal shop for 10 years in Boone, NC. She has directed and acted

for Ashe County Little Theatre for over 20 years and has designed and constructed

costumes for over 25 shows there also. She has been employed by Ashe Arts Council

for 21 years.
